Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Preview

Posted by chadmusselman on July 31, 2008

Pocono is the scene of this week’s race. This is the second race at Pocono in 2008. Kasey Kahne won the first race, can he sweep here? I’m not betting on it. Before he won the last race here he finished 22nd or worse in all but one race since 2005.

My fantasy team this week:

Chaser: Denny Hamlin
Denny is awesome at Pocono. In 5 career races his worst finish is 6th. His worst finish is 6th! He also has 2 wins and 4 top 5s. There’s no doubt about it that Denny is my top pick this weekend.

Alternate Chaser: Jimmie Johnson
Fresh off the Indy win Jimmie should keep the momentum going. With 2 wins at Pocono and an average finish of 10.3 Jimmie will have a good shot a winning back to back races.

Mark Martin
Mark is just a solid driver and is always up front when the final laps of the race are winding down. Although he’s never won at Pocono the does have 19 top 5’s and 30 top 10s in 43 career races. His average finish of 10.7 is pretty good as well. Mark will be in the front pack again this weekend for the final laps of the race.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Historically Dale doesn’t have great numbers at Pocono. A 16.5 average finish isn’t very good, and 0 wins doesn’t make you want to pick him, but in his last two races here he finished 4th and 2nd. Combine that with a solid 2008 season and it should be a good showing for Jr. at Pocono.

Darkhorse*: Brian Vickers
Brian barely qualifies as a darkhorse, but I’m picking him this week. He did real well in the Pocono race earlier this season, and should have the same type of success this weekend. In 9 career races at the track he has 4 top 5’s and an average finish of 13th.

*Darkhorse is anyone that didn’t make the chase last year and is 15th or worse in the points standings.
