3M Performance 400 at Michigan Preview

Posted by chadmusselman on August 15, 2008

This week’s race is the second of the season at the Michigan International Speedway. (And, I’ll be there live and in person to watch the race.) This is a wide race track which gives the drivers plenty of room to race, and can go long stretches caution free. Because of this, the race can also be determined by fuel-mileage. The cars now use an 18-Gallon fuel tank, so that may help reduce the odds of fuel mileage determining a winner.

My team this week:

Chaser: Carl Edwards
Carl has a 7.3 average finish at Michigan with one win, 4 top 5s and 7 top 10s in eight career races. Those numbers are hard to ignore.

Alternate Chaser: Matt Kenseth
Matt’s average finish of 9.3 isn’t quite as impressive as Carl’s, but it’s still really good. He has two wins, 8 top 5s and 12 top 10s in 18 career races. Matt should be running up front all day.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Jr. won the race here in June, and should do well again this weekend. Along with the win he has a 5th and 6th place finish in 3 of the last 4 at MIS. Dale has been solid all year, and looking for a second win to get more bonus points when the Chase begins. He may get that at Michigan.

Kasey Kahne
Kasey finished 2nd here in June behind Dale Earnhardt Jr. He’s done well at Michigan in his career with one win and 5 top 5s in only 9 career races.

Darkhorse: Brian Vickers
Brian isn’t great at Michigan, with a 18.5 average finish, but he has done okay, and with his success this season he should be able to pull off a top 10 finish this weekend. He does have four top 10s in 9 career races.
