Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond Preview

Posted by chadmusselman on September 4, 2008

This week is yet another Saturday night race. NASCAR is getting hooked on them as this season has more than ever before. I guess it makes sense this week so they don’t have to go head-to-head with week 1 of the NFL season.

My team this week:

Chaser: Kyle Busch
Kyle has an average finish of 5.6 at Richmond and 6 top 5s in 7 races. He’s ready to get another win and hold off Jimmie’s charge to position himself for the chase.

Alternate Chaser: Tony Stewart
Kevin Harvick was tough to ignore, but Tony has 3 wins here and 13 top 10s in 19 races. His average finish of 10.9 is slightly better than Harvick as well. Not to mention Kevin has 7 consecutive top 10s at Richmond and he’s due for a bad run.

Kasey Kahne
In 9 races he has a win, two top 5s and five top 10s at Richmond. His average finish of 15.3 isn’t stellar, but if he can stay out of trouble he should be in the top 10.

Mark Martin
Mark is one of the most experienced drivers at Richmond with 45 career races under his belt. In that time he’s won 1, had 14 top 5s, and 24 top 10s. His average finish of 12.2 is also very impressive, which means when he’s outside of the top 10 it’s not by much.

Darkhorse: Ryan Newman
It’s weird to think of the Daytona 500 winner as a darkhorse, but that’s what Ryan is sitting 16th in points and not making the chase last year. An odd stat about Newman is that since 2004 he’s had a top 10 finish at Richmond in the spring race, but hasn’t finished in the top 10 in the fall race. I’m betting that this is the time he breaks the trend and has a top 10 finish.
