Driver Recommendations for the 2009 Carfax 400 at Michigan

Posted by chadmusselman on August 10, 2009

Okay, so my recommendations stunk last week, only getting 477 points. Truex Jr. killed me on the last lap of the race. I promise I’ll do better this week.

Michigan International Speedway is a track where just about anyone can win. 15 active drivers have won at Michigan in their career, so there’s no telling who will win. As always, gas mileage could play a factor depending on how the cautions fall. This is a big, wide track, so there can be quite a bit of side-by-side racing. This also gives the drivers plenty of room to maneuver and avoid contact. If that happens on Sunday it could be a short and uneventful race.

Recommendations for this week:

Chaser: Carl Edwards
Carl has the best average finish at Michigan with a 6.3 finish among active drivers. He’s accumulated 9 top tens in 10 career races with 6 top fives, and 2 wins. This is the type of track that Carl can take the lead and dominate. He’s done very well on the 1.5 and 2 mile ovals, and is a good bet to win again this weekend.

Alternate Chaser: Tony Stewart
It was hard not to pick Matt Kenseth for this spot, but how can you go against Tony? He’s leading the points chase, he averages a 12.2 place finish at Michigan, and in his last 5 races he’s averaging a 3.8 place finish, easily the best. If you don’t think Carl will win, then pick Tony because he probably will.

Brian Vickers
Tony Stewart is the only driver hotter right now than Brian. Brian’s average finish over the last 5 races is 7.2, which ties Jimime Johnson for 2nd best. His 11th place finish at Watkins Glen was his first finish out of the top 10 since race 17 at New Hampshire. Brian has also done very well at Michigan recently. He has 4 consecutive top tens and a top five. He seems to be a solid pick this weekend.

Mark Martin
Mark had a rough go of it at The Glen. He should be able to rebound nicely at Michigan. He has 5 career wins, 17 top fives, and 29 top tens in 47 career races. His average finish of 12.9 is 6th best among active drivers. He did win here in the June race, so don’t be surprised if he does it again this weekend.

Darkhorse: David Ragan
In 5 career races at Michigan, David has 2 top tens, which he got last year. His worst finishes here were 18th and 21st in his rookie season, so he is definitely getting better at the track. His average finish of 13th is pretty good, so look for David to contend for another top ten this weekend.
