Driver Recommendations for 2010 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 at Michigan

Posted by chadmusselman on June 8, 2010

Michigan isn’t normally the most exciting track to watch a race, but it is a track that the drivers like.  It’s wide and can allow for 2 and 3-wide racing, and being 2 miles with the curved front-stretch, speeds can get up to and over 200 miles per hour.  From that you’d think things would be exciting, but with the track being so wide, it gives plenty of room to race and avoid trouble.  There has been a race or two in Michigan with no cautions.  Imagine a race ending in about 2 hours and 15 minutes.   It’s been done before at Michigan.  Well, let’s hope that isn’t the case this weekend.  The racing has actually been pretty good over the past couple weeks, so I think it’ll continue again on Sunday.

This Week’s Recommendations:

Chaser: Carl Edwards
Why pick Carl since he has 0 wins and only 1 top five this season?  Because he is lights-out at Michigan.  He’s finished in the top ten in the past 6 races here including two wins.  He also owns the best average finish in Michigan at 6.1.  Overall he’s been awesome.  In 11 career races he’s finished in the top ten 10 times.  Don’t look at his season stats this week, pay attention to his stats at Michigan.  If you do that you’ll see that he’s the best driver here and will be the favorite to win the race.

Alternate Chaser: Jeff Gordon
Brian Vickers would have been my pick here, but since he’s out I had to go with Jeff.  It may get old to talk about Jeff’s career numbers at a track since he does so well at all of them, but he does have great stats in Michigan.  Over 34 races he’s accumulated 2 wins, 17 top fives, 22 top tens and an average finish of 11.2 (3rd best).  Jeff is still without a win this year, but has been solid with 5 top fives.  He’s a good one to have on your team.

Matt Kenseth
Like Carl and Jeff, Matt has a very good average finish at the Michigan International Speedway (9.9), good enough for 2nd best among active drivers.  Although he didn’t finish in the top ten in either 2009 race he does have 13 top tens in his 21 career races.  Matt is good, and having a good season.  He should be on your team.

Kevin Harvick
This pick wasn’t very easy.  There are a lot of drivers that average about a 15th – 18th place finish at Michigan to choose from.  Kevin doesn’t have a win here, only 2 top fives, and 6 top tens in 18 career races.  Not great numbers, but I’m recommending him based on him having a great 2010.  He’s leading the points chase and has 10 top tens so far in the season.  Kevin is in the zone, and until he proves otherwise, he’s a must have on your team every week.

Dark Horse: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Dale is another one of the drivers that have with the 15th – 18th average finishing position (15.9) and not too impressive of career numbers.  Actually they’re very similar to Kevin Harvick’s.  21 career races, 7 top tens, 4 top fives, and 1 win.  He really does seem to be the best option of the drivers that are lower than 15th in the points standings without making the chase in 2009.
