Driver Recommendations for 2010 Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway

Posted by chadmusselman on June 15, 2010

It’s the first road course of the season.  Last year’s chasers do extremely well here with 7 of them in the top 10 in average finish at the track and 5 of them owning a win here.  Only 3 non-chasers have a win at Infineon Raceway.  So, with that, let’s see who the picks are for this week.

This Week’s Recommendations

Chaser: Jeff Gordon
Was there any doubt here?  Jeff is Mr. Sonoma, with 5 career victories, 10 top fives, and 13 top tens in 17 races.  His 9.3 average finish is also tied for 3rd best at the track.  His worst finishes here were 33rd, 37th, and 37th, so if he doesn’t get involved in a wreck, he’s money to finish in the top ten.  Jeff has also done well over the past 5 races of the season averaging a 11.4 place finish (8th best).  He’s a must start this week.

Alternate Chaser: Juan Montoya
It was hard not to pick Tony Stewart for this spot, but I give the edge to Juan.  Juan only has 3 career races at Infineon, but has finished in the top ten in each of them and collected a win and a top 5 as well.  His 4.3 average finishing position is tops at the track too.  Obviously his background in open-wheel racing makes him a road-course specialist, so he’s also a top pick this week.

Clint Bowyer
Who?  Yeah, that’s right, Clint Bowyer.  I have to be honest with you, I didn’t expect for Clint to have such a good record at Infineon and I’m surprised to see that he’s 13th in points right now.  He’s quietly putting together a solid season.  Clint owns the 2nd best average finishing position in Infineon (8.0) with 2 top fives, and 3 top tens in 4 career races.  Very solid stats and should be on your team.

Kyle Busch
This is one track that Kyle hasn’t really dominated.  When he tore up 2008 he did win this race, but that was his only top five finish at the track and he’s only managed 2 top tens here in his 5 career races.  His average finish of 16.4 is good enough for 10th best among active drivers.  That may not seem dominating, but look at what Kyle has done over the last 5 races this season.  His average finish is 6.6, 3rd best in that span.  His confidence is up, and he’s going to a track that he’s won at before.  He could do it again this weekend.

Dark Horse: Elliott Sadler
Elliott’s stats on the road course doesn’t seem that impressive (5 top tens in 11 races, and an average finish of 15.3 at the track), but believe it or not, that’s pretty good for Infineon.  The 15.3 average finish is good enough for 8th best among active drivers.  He finished 10th here last year, so it’s not out of the question for him to do it again.
