Driver Recommendations for 2010 Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway

Posted by chadmusselman on June 21, 2010

Before I talk about this week’s race, I have a quick note/complaint from Sonoma.  What was Jeff Gordon thinking in the closing laps?  How could he wreck Elliott Sadler and Clint Bowyer?  Didn’t he know that I had those guys on my team?

New Hampshire Motor Speedway is a newer track, being built in 1990, and hosted its first Sprint Cup race in 1993.  It’s a 1 mile, flat oval with only 7 degrees of banking in the turns and 2 degrees on the front and backstretch.  Most of the 2009 chasers have done very well here, so this could be another difficult week to find non-chasers   for your team.

This Week’s Recommendations:

Chaser: Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie has 16 races at New Hampshire Motor Speedway under his belt with 11 top tens, 5 top fives, and 2 wins.    His average finish of 9.5 at the track is 3rd best among active drivers.  Jimmie’s little mid-season slump seems to be over now that he’s registered a win and 3 top tens in the past 3 races.  It looks like he’s back on track and ready to charge back to the top of the point standings.

Alternate Chaser: Denny Hamlin
Denny has an even better average finish (7.5) at New Hampshire Motor Speedway than Jimmie.  In his 8 career races he has 6 top tens, 3 top fives and one win.  In the two races he finished outside of the top ten he place 15th, still not horrible.  If that wasn’t enough to put Denny on your team, then the fact that he’s averaged an 11.6 place finish over the past 5 races is 3rd best.

Matt Kenseth
Matt doesn’t have the best record here, but it’s pretty good.  20 races, 11 top tens, 5 top fives and an average finish of 13.6.  Seems pretty mediocre, but compare those numbers to the other drivers, and you’ll see that he’s a good option to have on your team.  He’s having a solid season and should be in the chase this year.

Kyle Busch
Kyle has similar numbers to Matt Kenseth at this track.  One win, 4 top fives, and 5 top tens in 10 career races.  His average finish is a little worse at 15.6.  Kyle does have two wins so far this season, and it looks like he should get two or three more this season.  He’s won here before, so he could do it again this weekend.

Dark Horse: Brad Keselowski
Brad only has one race here which was last season, but he did finish 6th.  He started 36th, so if he qualifies poorly don’t let it change your mind on putting Brad on your team.  He’s a decent driver and of the dark horses, he’s a pretty good one to pick.
