Driver Recommendations for 2010 AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway

Posted by chadmusselman on September 19, 2010

The second race of the chase is coming up and we’ll see if Clint Bowyer can follow-up his great run in New Hampshire.  With his win in New Hampshire Cling catapulted himself to second in points, trailing Denny Hamlin by 35 points.  Jimmie has the most wins in Dover among active drivers with five, but will he be able to recover from a 25th place finish last week?  He dropped five spots to 7th in the standings, 92 points out of first, so he needs a bounce-back race to get back in the thick of things.

This Week’s Recommendations:

Chaser: Matt Kenseth
Matt has been red-hot at Dover lately.  He’s finished in the top five in the last five races here.  He needs to do well this week since he now finds himself 12th in the standings.  For his career Matt has a win, 10 top five, and 15 top ten finishes in Dover.  His average finish of 12.7 at the track is good enough for 8th best among active drivers.  This is a track that Matt is comfortable with and should get him back on track and ready to do well the rest of the chase.

Alternate Chaser: Carl Edwards
No one has better average finish here than Carl Edwards.  His 7.9 place finish is more than 2 spots better than second place.  To get that 7.9 average finish Carl won a race, and finished in the top five five times and top ten eight times in twelve races.   Carl has also been one of the hottest drivers in NASCAR over the past five races.  He’s averaged a 7.6 place finish in that span which is 3rd best.

Ryan Newman
Three wins, 6 top five, and 10 top ten finishes and an average finish of 10.5 at Dover make Ryan a pretty smart pick.  With all of that success in his career here, Ryan has only finished in the top ten in two of the last six races.  He’s due and should have a good race this weekend.  Like Carl Edwards, Ryan has been pretty hot over the last five races.  He’s averaging a 11.2 place finish in the past five.

Jamie McMurray
Jamie doesn’t have the best record at Dover, with only one top five and five top ten finishes, but he’s been doing well lately.  He finished 3rd last week and should be building some confidence and be ready to have it carry over for a good performance this weekend.

Dark Horse: David Reutiman
I guess the theme this week is to pick the drivers that have been hot over the past five races, because David is another driver that’s been doing well lately.  He’s averaging a 12th place finish over the last five races, good enough for 7th best.  David isn’t totally awful at Dover though.  In the race here earlier in the season he did finish 5th, registering his first top ten at the track.  Combine that with him being hot lately, and he should be a good pick to have on your team.
