Driver Recommendations for 2010 Pepsi Max 500 at Auto Club Speedway

Posted by chadmusselman on October 4, 2010

The Auto Club Speedway is a track that the chasers have fared very well at.  Eight of the chasers are in the top ten of best average finishes at the track.  Seven of the chasers have won in California, compared to only three drivers not in the chase that have won here.

Luckily for us this is the last season that the Auto Club Speedway will host two NASCAR races.   They haven’t sold out a race since they were awarded a second date in 2004; pathetic.  I know for the 2011 season NASCAR is going into Kentucky, but maybe in the future when they take dates away from tracks they’ll just use that as an opportunity to shorten the season.  Is it just me, or are some of these races too boring to watch?

On to my picks.  It’s been a lot tougher to make picks since the chase started and my picks haven’t been so hot.  For a change of strategy the theme this week is, who’s been hot over the past five races?  Everyone I pick this week has better than a 12th place average finish over the last five.

This Week’s Recommendations:

Chaser: Jimmie Johnson
I know it sounds like a broken record always picking Jimmie, but tell me who’s better.  No one can match Jimmie’s five wins in California and his 5.5 average finish is easily the best.  Not to mention he’s won 3 of the last 4 races here.  Jimmie is the best driver in NASCAR today, maybe ever.  If you don’t have him on your team, then you can’t complain when you lose points to other players that do.

Alternate Chaser: Carl Edwards
Carl isn’t as good as Jimmie here, but he’s not too bad.  The Auto Club Speedway has the configuration that Carl dominated for a couple of years.  His average finish at the track is 7.2 and he has 10 top ten finishes in 12 career races.  Carl has also been doing well lately averaging a 6.8 place finish over the last 5 races.  If you are sick of Jimmie Johnson and want a different chaser on your team, Carl is probably the smart pick.

Ryan Newman
Ryan is averaging an 8.8 place finish over the last five races.  To be honest, he hasn’t been good in California the last four races.  His last top ten was the spring race in 2008 when he finished 10th.  I’ll take this as meaning he’s due for a top ten, especially since he’s been good lately this season.

Jamie McMurray
Jamie is averaging an 11.8 place finish over the last five races.  He does have five top ten finishes here in his 14 career races, but the last one was in the spring of 2006.  He’s up to 14th in points, so he could definitely have a good run this weekend.

Dark Horse: AJ Allmendinger
Believe it or not, AJ is averaging an 11.6 place finish over the last five races.  His best finish is 14th in five career races at the track.   It seems that AJ may have figured things out recently as he’s collected three top ten finishes in the last four races this season.  This weekend could be his first top ten finish in at the Auto Club Speedway.
