Driver Recommendations for 2010 Kobalt Tools 500 at Phoenix International Raceway

Posted by chadmusselman on November 9, 2010

Finally, some life out of the drivers!  Kudos to Jeff Gordon for actually getting mad enough to confront Jeff Burton and try to punch him after being wrecked.  If you missed it, check out the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt_6dMfXIsI  The wreck and fight start around the 2 minute mark.  I like to see Jeff Gordon showing the emotion and proving that he really does care and still gets worked up about racing.  Maybe that emotion and fire can fuel him to a good finish this weekend in Phoenix.

With only two races left in the season Denny finds himself in the lead by 33 points over Jimmie Johnson and 59 points over Kevin Harvick.  Can he hold onto the lead, or will Jimmie have his 5-peat?

This Week’s Recommendations:

Chaser: Jimmie Johnson
Like almost every other track on the circuit Jimmie Johnson has dominated the Phoenix International Raceway.  He’s averaging a 4.9 place finish over his 14 career races at the track.  He only has two finishes outside of the top ten.  Amazing!  In addition to the 12 top ten finishes Jimmie has 5 wins and 9 top five finishes.  There’s no way he’ll let Denny win his championship, so look for Jimmie to win this weekend and possibly retake the points lead.

Alternate Chaser: Denny Hamlin
Denny is pretty good at Phoenix himself with six top ten and five top five finishes in 10 races.  He’s averaging an 11.6 place finish here.  He’s in the points lead looking for his first career championship.  He is getting hot at the right time.  He’s averaging a 4.6 place finish over the past five races.  This may be the best chance he ever gets to with the Cup title, and it looks like he’s taking capitalizing on it.

Mark Martin
Mark is the owner of the second best average finish among active drivers (8.7).  He has also won here twice, and racked up 12 top five and 18 top ten finishes in 27 career races.  Mark has also been hot lately, averaging a 7.2 place finish over the last 5 races.  He’s good, and he should be on your team this weekend.  He’ll be contending for the win come the end of the race.

Juan Montoya
Juan only has two top ten finishes in Phoenix in 7 career races, but they were in two of the last three races here so he’s learned how to handle the track.  Juan isn’t spectacular, but he’s a solid driver and should content for another top ten finish this weekend.

Dark Horse: David Reutimann
Like Juan, David has two top ten finishes in Phoenix in the last three races here.  He’s a dark horse for a reason, but last season he showed potential at the track and proved that he can finish in the top ten.  If you’re desperate for points he could be a good pickup since not many others will probably have him on their team.
