Fantasy NASCAR Recommendations for 2011 Subway Fresh Fit 500

Posted by chadmusselman on February 21, 2011

This week’s race is at the Phoenix International Raceway.  We’ll see who can continue to build on their good performance at Daytona and who can bounce back.  A lot of last year’s chasers took it on the chin with half of them finishing 25th or worse.  Luckily for them it’s just one race, and there are 25 more before the chase begins.  There are also quite a few new faces in the top ten in points.  We’ll see if Gilliland, Smith, and Menard can string together a few good finishes to try to stay up in the standings.  A lot of last year’s chasers have done well here in their career.  Eight of them being in the top 10 in average finishes at the track, and nine of them with at least one win at the track.

This Week’s Recommendations

Chaser: Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie didn’t have a very good race at Daytona, but he is more than dominant in Phoenix.  In 15 career races he has 4 wins (more than any other active driver), 10 top five and 13 top ten finishes.  His worst finish is 15th, back in 2002 & 2005.  Johnson also sports the best average finish at the track; 4.9.  There is no one better than him at the Phoenix International Raceway.  There’s no way you can leave Jimmie off your team this week.

Alternate Chaser: Carl Edwards
Edwards isn’t as great as Jimmie Johnson, but he does have 9 top ten finishes in 13 career races in Phoenix.  He also won here last year for his first win at the track.  His average finish of 11.8 is pretty darn good too.  If you’re sick of Jimmie Johnson and want a different chaser on your team, Carl may be your guy.

Mark Martin
The old man can still get it done.  Mark Martin is on a 4 race streak of top ten finishes at the Phoenix International Raceway.  In his great career Martin has raced here 28 times finishing in the top ten 19 times, top five 12 times with 2 wins.  His 8.6 place average finish is second best only to Jimmie Johnson.  Martin is more than a quality driver and should be able to make the chase again this year and contend for the title.  Put him on your team, and watch him get some points for you.

Joey Logano
After some growing pains at Phoenix in 2009, Logano learned how to get around the track.  He recorded two top ten finishes in 2010 with 10th and 3rd place finishes.  This is Logano’s third season at the Cup level and it’s time for him to show that he is a quality driver and has the ability to make the chase. Performing well at Phoenix should be his first step to doing this.

Dark Horse: David Reutimann
Reutimann had a pretty solid 2010 season, finishing 18th in points, although he didn’t have a good performance in the Daytona 500.  This week David needs to have a good run and show that he can contend for a top 15 spot in the point standings.  Reutimann does have some success here with two top ten finishes in 2009.  He may be worth taking a chance on this weekend.
